At Jewish House, we believe housing is more than shelter. It’s a foundation for recovery, a place of safety, and an opportunity to make a fresh start. That belief is at the heart of our newest initiative: the Randwick Supported Temporary Accommodation (STA) for Men.
Launched earlier this month with support from the NSW Government and Homes NSW through the Homelessness Innovation Fund, the 12-room residence in Randwick is already making an impact. Within just five days of opening, the STA reached full capacity with its first group of men. A clear indication of how urgent and unmet this unmet need truly is.
Far too often, men in crisis end up in unsuitable or unsafe arrangements such as boarding houses, couch surfing, or rough sleeping, because there simply aren’t enough appropriate options. That lack of access can exacerbate existing challenges and trap people in cycles of instability. The Randwick STA breaks that pattern by offering a scalable, community-integrated model of support.
Filling a Critical Gap in the Eastern Suburbs
Men remain significantly overrepresented in homelessness statistics, accounting for 55.9% nationally, and nearly 59% locally in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs. Despite this, very few supported housing services are tailored specifically for men, especially those facing intersecting challenges such as mental illness, addiction, trauma, or legal system involvement.
The Randwick STA was designed to directly respond to this unmet need. Located close to Randwick Junction, the house offers convenient access to employment services, community health centres, public transport, hospitals, and shops. This central placement is strategic, empowering residents to reconnect with services and opportunities that can help them move forward.
More Than a Roof
What sets the Randwick STA apart is its person-centred, trauma-informed approach. The house has been intentionally designed to offer comfort, privacy, and connection. Residents are not only given a safe and stable environment but also the wrap-around support needed to address the root causes of their homelessness.
Every resident has access to:
- A dedicated case management team, including social workers.
- A mental health nurse and psychologist.
- Bulk-billing psychiatric care through trusted referral pathways.
- Onsite internet access to support job-seeking, education, and social connection.
We also work closely with external partners, including housing providers, parole officers, local police, and real estate agents, to support longer-term pathways into secure, sustainable housing. Our goal is not just to provide temporary accommodation, but to build bridges toward independence.
Help Us Expand Safe, Supportive Housing for Men in Crisis
The Randwick STA is already changing lives, but the current need far exceeds the number of available beds. Every day, men in our community face homelessness, often with nowhere safe to turn.
With your support, we can continue to grow services like this, offering not just shelter, but access to mental health care, case management, and a pathway toward long-term stability. Whether you choose to donate, volunteer, or simply share our work, your support helps us reach more people when they need it most.
