At Jewish House, we provide support for individuals and families facing unexpected financial challenges through our No Interest Loans Scheme (NILs). Designed for low-income earners, NILs offers interest-free loans to help cover essential expenses without the burden of fees or interest.

NILs is a program designed to provide small, interest-free loans of up to $2,000 to low-income families and individuals across NSW.

What can I use NILs for?

Borrow up to $2,000 for essential goods and services including:

  • Household items like appliances, whitegoods & furniture
  • Car repairs & registration
  • Medical, dental, wellbeing and life event expenses
  • Technology like a phone or laptop
  • Education expenses like fees or uniforms
  • Employment expenses like licenses or equipment

Borrow up to $3,000 for:

  • Bond & rent in advance
  • Rates
  • Costs associated with a natural disaster

Who can apply?

To be eligible for help through NILs, you must:
  • Have a Health Care Card or Pension Card, OR earn less than $70,000 per year after tax ($100,000 for couples or people with dependents)
  • Have lived at your current or previous address for more than three months. However, there are some exceptional circumstances including:
    • Applicants in transitional housing
    • People experiencing family violence
    • Those is state/community housing transfer
    • Applicants who have not had an address for an extended period
    • Those struggling to obtain a proof of residency (e.g. remote areas)
  • Demonstrate a willingness and capacity to repay the loan.

How to apply for NILs with Jewish House

Contact Us: Reach out to our NILs team via reception at (02) 9386 0770 to begin the application process. We'll provide you with all the necessary information and guidance.

Submit Required Documents: Once you've made contact, we'll ask you to provide some documents to demonstrate your eligibility for a loan. Our team will explain exactly what you need to submit.

Attend a Follow-Up Meeting: After compiling all the required documents, we'll schedule a follow-up meeting with you. During this discussion, we'll further assess your needs and discuss the details of your application. Meetings typically last between 30 minutes to one hour.

Loan Assessment and Approval: Following your interview, your loan application will be submitted for assessment. We aim to inform you of the outcome within two business days.

Please Note: While NILs loans can provide crucial financial assistance, there are certain restrictions on how the funds can be used. They cannot be used for the following purposes: food, utility bills, cash advances, fines or penalties, debt repayment/consolidation, vehicle purchase, second-hand electrical goods or baby furniture, lay-by, airfares, clothing (except uniforms), or the bundling of many small goods.
